Automation Engineer Test Systems & Data Integration (m/f/d)

Innolume GmbH is a leading provider of optoelectronic devices based on InGaAs/GaAs quantum-well and quantum-dot technologies, covering a wavelength range from 780 nm to 1350 nm. With our two MBE reactors, we support the epitaxial growth of In, Al, Ga, and AsP/GaAs heterostructures, ensuring flexibility and sustainability for both development and volume production.

As part of our continued growth, we are looking for an Automation Engineer – Test Systems & Data Integration (m/f/d) to join our team at our headquarters in Dortmund on a permanent basis.

Responsibilities

  • Upgrade and automate existing measurement and test stations for high-volume manufacturing environments.
  • Design and implement automation solutions, including pick-and-place systems, precision alignment processes, and automated measurement sequences.
  • Develop and optimize machine control software, motion control systems, and equipment integration.
  • Design, build, and maintain robust architectures for automated data collection from production and test equipment.
  • Develop reliable bi-directional data workflows, including transferring machine configurations and test recipes to equipment and collecting measurement and test data for central databases and analytics platforms.
  • Write clean, maintainable software and scripts for hardware control, measurement automation, and data processing.
  • Analyze existing equipment and manufacturing processes to identify opportunities for increased automation, improved reliability, and reduced cycle times.
  • Commission, validate, and support automated production and testing systems.
  • Collaborate closely with Production, R&D, Quality, and IT teams to ensure seamless integration between manufacturing equipment and business systems.
  • Prepare technical documentation, system architectures, deployment guides, and engineering reports.
  • Train operators and support personnel on assigned systems and processes.
  • Support quality assurance activities and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Prepare Engineering Change Requests, Issue Reports, and Permission for Deviation documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) requirements and company standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience in industrial automation, test automation, machine integration, or manufacturing engineering environments.
  • Strong knowledge of PLC programming, motion control systems, machine vision, image processing, and industrial communication technologies.
  • Experience with measurement systems, data acquisition, and automated test equipment.
  • Advanced programming skills in Python for automation, data processing, and system integration.
  • Experience with SQL databases, database design, and high-volume data management.
  • Familiarity with C#, .NET, or C++ for hardware interfacing and equipment integration is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of industrial and laboratory communication protocols such as TCP/IP, RS-232/485, VISA, SCPI, or OPC UA.
  • Experience with data serialization formats such as CSV, JSON, and XML.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for complex electromechanical systems.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple technical projects simultaneously.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with LabVIEW, TestStand, MATLAB, or comparable automation and test software environments.
  • Knowledge of version control systems such as Git.
  • Understanding of Industry 4.0 concepts and smart manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with Industrial PCs (IPCs), laboratory networks, and automated test infrastructures.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing, photonics, or high-tech production environments.
